Stories

Ideas become stories when somebody decides to test them.

The Gene Zapper

The challenge

Early electroporation technology existed in research settings but had not been developed into reliable, commercializable equipment for genetics and cancer-research laboratories.

The connection

An unexpected conversation and collaboration with University of Wisconsin geneticist Oliver Smithies opened the door.

Bruce's role

Bruce and Prototype Design Services worked to develop and commercialize early electroporation equipment used by genetics and cancer-research laboratories.

What was learned

A conversation can open a market nobody expected.

It demonstrates how a single unexpected connection can move a technology from the lab bench to the real world.

The Money Mangler

The challenge

U.S. government researchers needed a reliable system to test the physical durability of paper currency under real-world conditions.

The connection

The problem required a blend of mechanical engineering, software and creative problem-solving that did not fit neatly into any single discipline.

Bruce's role

Prototype Design Services helped develop a computerized system used in U.S. government research to test the physical durability of paper currency. Bruce gave it the memorable nickname "Money Mangler."

What was learned

Even money can become a design problem.

It shows that the most interesting design challenges often hide inside the most ordinary objects.

Field File 03 — Laser & Public Events

Lighting Up Madison

The challenge

Ambitious public laser presentations required combining technology, music, local talent and unconventional problem-solving in ways that had not been done before.

The connection

The project brought together people from different disciplines who would not normally have collaborated.

Bruce's role

Bruce and his collaborators helped organize the productions.

What was learned

A technical project can also become a shared human experience.

It is a reminder that technology is most powerful when it connects people to something larger than the technology itself.

Field File 04 — IdeaToMarket

From the Archive

IdeaToMarket

The challenge

Inventors and entrepreneurs often have promising ideas but lack the specialized knowledge, networks and resources to move them toward reality.

The connection

Bruce recognized that the right team rarely exists at the start — it has to be assembled around the specific demands of each project.

Bruce's role

Through Prototype Design Services and later IdeaToMarket, Bruce worked across product evaluation, prototyping, technical development, manufacturing, cost analysis, patents, commercialization and specialized resource teams.

What was learned

The right team does not always exist until the problem defines it.

IdeaToMarket was built on the belief that the path from idea to market is rarely straight and almost never traveled alone.

Have a story worth telling?

The best stories usually start with a question nobody has asked yet.
